A dazzling novel with unexpected twists, DISTANT STARLESS NIGHTS is a captivating tale about one woman’s search for love across decades and continents.

Kimberly Rochester has led a life filled with romance and adventure. The years have also dealt her unimaginable heartbreak, but she has always triumphed over adversity thanks to her exceptional spirit and inner strength.

Then one day she finds herself alone and in despair on a beach near her manor house in Brittany. She is on the brink of relinquishing everything… until her teenaged grandchildren arrive just in time. Eager to remind their grandmother of her courage, they beg her to share her life story. Their only request? She must leave nothing out.

Kim’s history begins with an elite London upbringing, surrounded by wealth and privilege but filled with loneliness. Refusing to let her relentlessly cruel mother or a harsh Belgian convent school dampen her passion for life, Kim discovers her first friendships and the depths of her own imagination. Her dashing and loving godfather, Uncle Oliver, is a guiding light whose love and tales of adventure give her comfort and ignite her curiosity.

As Kim recounts her young adulthood in Paris, her journey to China during the Cultural Revolution, her dangerous love affair, the birth of her children, and the secrets and lies she uncovers along the way — she weaves a portrait of an extraordinary woman who can see the world’s beauty even in the most fragile and fleeting moments. Inspired by the author’s own life, this heartfelt novel also reveals how resilience, hope, and family can sustain a person through the greatest of hardships.

3.5 stars, rounding up This is one of the best debut novels I've read in a long time. I haven't read anything quite like Distant Starless Nights before. Kimberly Rochester, the main character, gives a first person account of her life from her own birth to the birth of her children. The story is much darker than expected, with events that include suicide, sexual assault and emotional abuse, all of which were handled quite tastefully.
Distant Starless Nights is marketed as a romance, but I'm not sure it entirely fits in the romance genre. It has one foot in, and one foot out. The theme that ties to story together is (I think) how to find a guiding lights in your life when your parents - who are supposed to be the primary source of guidance in a person's life - have completely failed you in terms of providing moral and emotional support. Once Kim's nanny is taken away from her as a young child, Kim's primary emotional support is a mouse she found in a closet at her boarding school, and later her godfather. From there, Kim gets better and better at holding fast to people who fill her life with love and support.

The writing is well crafted throughout, and especially during Kim's primary love interest. My only critique is that there's a lot of stuff happening and not enough Kim. I lived half a lifetime with Kim, but she still felt just at arm's length. Perhaps the issue is that the book is a bit too expansive. So much had happened by the end of the book, that we seemed light years away from the newborn baby we met on page one. Tightening the theme of motherhood could have helped connect the book as well. The pacing of the story moved along at a solid clip, and I'd hate to throw a wrench in it. But I do hope the next book takes some more time to explore key themes. Nevertheless, this was a strong first entry in a series that I look forward to finishing!

Distant Starless Nights Myriam Ullens Books Reviews

Great story and characters! I love a book with a background of factual history and one that challenges you to research more.
Has a peculiar beginning and the rest done in flashback. You're waiting for the past to explain the present, but it ends abruptly without getting to the answer you keep waiting for. Some other unplausible aspects. Quality of writing is pretty good, though.
It was a very interesting book about a horrible unloved childhood. The writing is well done for a first book. Looking forward and persevering during adversity is really the theme of this story. Unusual adventures during chaotic world times. Enjoyable read.
The plot of this book seemed like it should generate suspense around every corner; however, the author instead takes us through a fairly predictable set of events. Particularly of note, the antagonist characters were incredibly flat. There was not much rationale provided for their cruel ways or visibility into their development. I came to stop expecting any character to act any differently than how they were introduced in the first page of meeting them.
An interesting story, well-written with some unexpected twists. The story lost just a bit of interest and a lot relevance for me due to the main character's upper-crust status. Yes, she suffered much but it's a little hard to sympathize with some of the plights of such a privileged person.
As heading states, I'm not at all sure if I want to read this one... I started it, and it's both boring and depressing so far... I created a special folder for this category of book Not Sure! I just can't go there right now.
Distant starless nights was recommended to me by no one else than Christine Lagarde - yes, the Managing Director of the IMF. Nothing to do with economics, and not a romance novel as I feared - rather, think about an Eat, Pray, Love type of self-discovery (fictional) memoir, told through Kim Rochester's flash-back stories in London, France and China during the troubled times of the Cultural revolution. A great heroine and a very nice read.
