Recruited into MI6___ the British Intelligence Service___ Michael Adler a United States citizen finds himself in a conflicted romantic entanglement with Claire Jaurés, a self-proclaimed French pacifist and socialist. Since war has not yet started, Michael and Claire attend lavish and decadent parties hosted by the inimitable Gertrude Stein, where they mix with artists like Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse, as well as the Russian revolutionist Vladimir Lenin. The relationship of the two lovers eventually becomes challenged by the fact that Michael is sent on assignment to Austria-Hungary by First Lord of the British Admiralty, Winston Churchill. Claire remains a resolute pacifist, and is opposed to any construction of warships. Adler agonizes over the possibility that his espionage activities may actually be fueling an impending war in Europe, and his impassioned love for the young French woman ends up putting him at odds with his devotion to duty.
Adler’s overseas assignment brings him into direct contact with many notable historical figures including Winston Churchill, Sir Edward Grey, Pablo Picasso, Ernest Hemingway, Rasputin the Mad Monk, and the French journalist Jean Jaurés. Meanwhile behind the scenes, conspiratorial political and corporate schemes are being hatched by the likes of JP Morgan, JD Rockefeller, Colonel Edward Mandell House and President Woodrow Wilson.
Though this novel is a work of fiction, the reader will be enlightened by an array of historical facts relative to the time period including dress, culture, industrial innovations and political exploitations. "1914, A Prelude to Love and War" is the first book in this series of romantic historical fiction novels centered around the First World War. This novel is an independent story and can be read alone, or it may be enjoyed with any of the other books in the series.

When people realize this was NOT just WWI but the beginning of WWII, learning about it becomes more urgent. Looking at our world's situation, reading this is more important. The premise is good but the execution is flawed. From what I remember from college the author has not done his research with any rogor, especially as that relates to the societal norms extant in western Europe and the USA. I guess what bothers me the most is that the author is not consistent in his errors; he ranges from putting a modern rsaction to an "ancient" attitude as part of his character's profile, to totally ignoring the existing industrial and transport capacities of the day that do not further the author's plot points. It could have been very good.
Lots of interesting history interwoven with a good story line. Had not seen many novels set in this interesting era.

I was surprised as to how much information was in this novel. It was presented in a novel theme of love, relationships and a ton of information leading up to ww1
I didn't know what to expect at first from Dr. Coatoam, the first of his books I've ever read. This book was full of interesting hisory about what lead up to WWI, some which I knew, but most I didn't. I really enjoyed the footnotes as the story unfolded and the was taken in but how well written it was. I can hardly wait for the next book to come out. Thanks for taking the time to put your story in to print and for all the research you've done. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it.
This was a very good read. a friend wrote it and I am VERY impressed. I would read more of his work.
